Press Release Launch Chemport Europe

Accelerating the green economy and putting the chemical sector of this region on the global map is the shared ambition of Chemport Europe. On 7 February 2017 the new ‘ecosystem’ was launched - the TopDutch focus on bio-based chemistry. Chemport Europe gives existing businesses in the region a powerful impulse, attracts new national and international companies and gives promising start-ups a flying start.

Everything will be green: raw materials and energy

Crops, such as potatoes, sugar beet and wheat, are required to develop sustainable chemicals and products. The Dutch agricultural sector has the highest yield per square metre and is extremely efficient and highly organised. In other words, it is the perfect foundation for green chemistry. The ecosystem produces excellent score in terms of heat and power, as it already generates 8 gigawatt of green electricity and 500 megawatt of wind energy. That is only the beginning, the region continues to invest in renewable energy.

Connection: chains and access

In Chemport Europe chemical companies can link up with existing chains, ensuring that the chemical sector in this ecosystem will become more sustainable and greener at a rapid rate. This creates a circular economy, because different companies operate in the same sector and exchange raw materials – intermediate chemicals around Delfzijl, polymers and fibre around Emmen. Companies that locate here can link up with nitrogen and hydrogen networks and with a centralised wastewater purification system. The existing infrastructure with ports, airports, railways and motorways guarantees access to global markets for purchase and sales.

Working on the future: knowledge and talent

Groningen University and various universities of applied science work together intensively in Chemport Europe. There are testing sites where science fuels innovation, creating new ideas for sustainable products and applications. There are various intermediate vocational courses where young people with talent are prepared for jobs in logistics, agribusiness, the energy sector or the chemical industry. Talent that will prove important to the future of green chemistry.

Shared ambition: quick decisions

Chemport Europe welcomes entrepreneurs with ambitions to capitalise on the opportunities provided by green chemistry. The shared ambition of companies, government and universities facilitates quick decisions and smooth permit processes. The environmental movement also supports the transition towards green chemistry. In Chemport Europe a plan becomes reality in no time.
