Engineering for the world’s first full-scale plant for PHA production from process water has begun

Hoogezand – Paques Biomaterials and ESKA have signed a collaboration agreement with Envirochemie and Paques (both part of the Skion Water Group) and Jorritsma Bouw on how to execute the engineering phase of the world’s first Full-Scale Plant for PHA Production from Process Water. This agreement includes extensive commitments for the engineering phase and the remainder of the project, now officially named Project Gecko.

Today marked the kick-off session with all involved parties, officially launching the engineering phase. This phase is expected to conclude by Q3 2025, paving the way for an investment decision by year-end.

“This is a milestone project for Paques Biomaterials, as it marks our transition from scale-up to commercial scale,” said Joost Paques. “This full-scale plant is definitive proof that we are in business.”

For ESKA, this is equally significant. Brian Oost, Head of Operations – Solid Board Business Area at ESKA, closed the session with:
“It’s fantastic to see this becoming a reality. With these strong partners, ESKA is taking a major step toward fulfilling its sustainability ambitions.”
